ABOUT MICHAEL SAWATSEWI
Back in 1997, A-Town/Music-X/ONPA recording artist Michael Sawatsewi enjoyed solo success with his debut Thai album “Sawasdee Michael”, overseen by renowned producer Kai Sutee Sangsareechon, and co-produced by award-winning Italian producer Bruno Brugnano. In late 1997, despite the Asian financial crisis, the album sold well on the strength of the Prapikaned Award-nominated single “Pood La Sak Kam” and follow-up “Cheb Krao Nee”, a radio airplay hit also featured on hit primetime drama “Sairoong” on local Thai TV Channel 3. The following year, “Pood La Sak Kam” enjoyed a resurgence of sorts when it was featured in popular Thai drama “Sam Noom Nua Thong”. The song is arguably a classic now, having inspired cover versions in the new millennium by, most notably, top-selling RS Promotion female artist Parn Tanaporn in 2005 and GMM Grammy artist Niew for the compilation album “REMIND” in 2006. Yet despite the high-profile remakes, Michael’s original version of the song surprisingly continues to be played on Thai radio to this day and performed by local bands in night pubs throughout the country.
In the new millennium, after a grueling period of promotion and touring, Michael decided to lay low in the music scene to focus on studies and personal endeavors. He made vocal contributions to various indie projects and focused more on songwriting, writing for independent and mainstream artists, such as John Rattanaveroj (of NUVO fame), Nicole Theriault, Dan & Beam, Parn Tanaporn, Lydia, Benjamin James Dooley of Gear Knight, and Pod Duang, among others. Michael has also extensively collaborated with Thai/Italian Christian artist Debbie Klongtruadroke on her English album "Crossover" and Italian album "Angolo di Cuore", and Thai/Filipino electro artist/producer Cesar B. de Guzman, aka Cyndi Seui, on his electro-pop album "My Name is DOS".
After a two-year stint as a feature writer and editor for “Apartment Living” and “Education Living” magazines, Michael returned to music full-time in 2009. In the past year, alongside good friend Jaree Thanapura, aka Gramaphone Children, Michael co-wrote and co-produced 50 original English-language children’s songs for TV show “Wonderful English”, a production of Sonix Youth 1999, as well as “Can’t Miss with Chris”, the buoyant, tongue-in-cheek opening theme song of Acharn Chris’ widely-popular stand-up comedy show “Chris Unseen”. More recently, Michael accepted an invitation from Pam Lalita Tavedikul, host and executive producer of hit reality-TV show “Superstar”, to teach at her state-of-the-art performing arts school Superstar Academy, where Michael now indulges in a new musical passion—vocal coaching.
"I’m lucky to have friends in music who are really good at what they do and enjoy working with me,” he says, smiling. “I love working with these people! You have fun while learning a lot from them, but more than anything else, the thing about working with friends is that it really doesn’t feel like work at all! And that’s always the best part!”
